Interview with Bahari

Three girls who are ready to reach success in the music industry - that is how we can call the band Bahari from Manhattan Beach. The band consists of three young female artists: Ruby Carr, Sidney Sartini and Natalia Panzarella, who recently released their debut EP “Dancing On The Sun” and spent their vacation touring with Selena Gomez, DNCE and Birdy. In the interview the girls are talking about the beginning of their career, inspirations, vacation memories and future plans.

Bahari was formed three years ago and on 13 May 2016 you released your highly anticipated folk/soft rock EP called "Dancing On The Sun". How did the story of your band start and was it difficult for you to get along with each other?

We all met at the studio, we recorded our EP "Dancing On The Sun", and we instantly got along very well. It's rare to meet three girls your age who share the same passion for music. We started writing songs together and shortly after we decided that we should become a band, because we were already spending so much time together and it just made sense.

I think the thing that brought us together is the music, so no matter our differences we made sure to not let that interfere with the bigger picture of what we wanted our band to be. We were so close and we like to say "sisters by choice". Of course we still argue over little things, but we always find a way to laugh about it later, because we love each other and we know that supporting each other will only make us stronger as a band.

The songs from your album are about teenagers' loves and affections, beach life and summer activities. How can you describe your sources of inspirations and what is your favourite song from your EP?

What inspired all of the songs on our EP is the fact that we are three teenage girls who are growing up and experiencing things as any teenager would. Three years ago we were normal girls in high school. We write about our experiences and living in Los Angeles, the California lifestyle influenced our music heavily, because of the carefree and nostalgic vibe that California gives off, it inspired us to encourage people our own age to live your life and experience things and have fun while you can.

You were the supporting band of Selena Gomez, DNCE and Birdy during their summer US tours and you recorded a song "Addicted To A Memory" with Zedd. It is pretty impressive that you have had so many achievements in such a young age. Which of these collaborations did you find the most exciting and amazing?

It was such an incredible honor touring with Selena Gomez, DNCE and Birdy. We have been huge fans of Birdy for years. Her talent and music is extremely inspirational and one of her songs is actually one of the first songs I learnt how to play on piano. So touring with her was an incredible feeling.

I think we can all agree that when we found out the news about joining Selena Gomez in tour, we were all so overwhelmed. I'm pretty sure we all cried and called our mums. Selena Gomez is one of the most iconic women of all time, she inspires millions of young girls and she continues to be such an incredible role model. Her hard work and grace is extremely inspirational to us and being on tour with her just proved what kind of person she is, she's so kind to everyone and I think that's something that people should always know about her. It was such a surreal experience. I think we all find it hard to believe it actually happened sometimes.

Working with Zedd was an incredible experience, we had no music out and no one really knew who we were, so for someone as successful as Zedd to approach us was a very exciting moment. He is such a character and we are so honored to be a part of his incredible album "True Colors".

The word "bahari" means "ocean" in Ruby's first language Swahili and you are based on Manhattan Beach. What is the influence of being raised by the ocean on your attitude to life? Do you have your favorite water sports?

Bahari means the ocean in Swahili, which is the language of Kenya, where I was raised my whole life. Even though we grew up 10,000 miles apart, we all grew up around the ocean and that had a huge influence on us and the music we listened to. The beach lifestyle has created some of our most influential bands, and we take a lot of inspiration from the beach/California lifestyle.

We spend so much time at the beach and in the ocean, but when I was in high school I was on the swim team and played water polo!

During musical performances it is important to always look fresh and energetic, but of course everyone can have a bad day in their life. What are your tips to overcome your weaknesses and look perfect on stage?

Everyone has bad days every once in a while, whether your sick, tired or your hair just isn't doing what it's supposed to do. We always make sure to encourage each other and remember that ultimately as long as we put on a good performance that's all that matters. We do our hair and makeup, but once we get on stage we forget about all of that, we are so in the moment of being on stage.

Your record label is Interscope Records, which is also a record label of such artists as Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey and Madonna, so you are like desired to achieve success in the music industry. Can we expect a full-length album and the European tour from you in the future? Are you ready to conquer the music charts?

Being signed to Interscope Records, along with some of the most iconic musicians of all time, is an extreme honor. It's a reminder to us of how hard we have to work and how much we want this. We just want to keep making music and do what we can and play more shows! Hopefully soon we will be headlining our own tour and get to go overseas. We are currently in the progress of making a full length album that's coming soon!! So stay tuned.
